This page is meant to be a list of all record times for main page categories. Progression of categories before 2013 is difficult to figure out from public information, so some records may be missing.

Additionally, the vast majority of runs performed before 2005, which are listed as "ancient history", were performed in segments and using the ZSNES emulator.

Because [[Any% Glitched]] and [[Any% GT Code]] were split into separate categories, there is an overlap in times.

For [[0%|Low% Glitched]] (and [[14%|low%]] categories in general), a lower percentage obsoletes a higher percentage regardless of time.

Notes can give an indication on when a major change occurred to a category that the run incorporated, and that future runs would start to incorporate. Such changes include but are not limited to acquiring less items during the run and utilizing a different boss order.

Unless otherwise noted, every record from June 6, 2017 onward contains [[Moonwalk#Moonfall|moonfall]].

== 15% (Low% Ancient History) ==

Prior to the discovery of the Zebetite skip in July 2003, Kejardon completed a segmented 15% run, with the segments being recorded between March 2002 and January 2003.
The items collected were almost the same as a 14% speed run, except an additional missile pack was collected. Zebetites were destroyed one at a time with Missile refills in-between.
This run was recorded with ZSNES 1.30, and due to issues with ZSNES movie file (.zmv) playback, the final two segments do not play back properly.

You want to enter this room in a spinjump, so that you can do a descending Space Jump until you're past the lowest stalactite, then start Space Jumping up towards the top platform.

The more you can descend on each Space Jump the faster it will be, but this must be balanced against dropping far enough that you lose the Space Jump state and just fall to the floor, which costs significant time.

Enter this room by running through the door transition, then [[downback]] until you reach the bottom, just past the bottom-middle pirate. Climb up until you're on the top floating platform of the set that goes up-left, [[walljump]] off of the top floating platform, over the top pirate, shoot the door open, and hold an angle-down shot through the door transition. Optionally, short-charge a shinespark so that you can kill two pirates in the next room.

Also known as the "Leodox Room", due to a missed ledge grab making a decisive difference in a [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE33upeigNk tournament match] between Leodox and WildAnaconda69.

In addition to falling down the [[Climb]] at the start of the game, this is one of the most common rooms to perform a [[moonfall]].

After you reach the bottom of the descent, acid will start filling up the bottom of the room as soon as you start moving right.

== Any% ==

All Any% strats involve walljumping through the first pirate using the i-frames gained from being hit by a pirate's laser during the shinespark crash animation in the previous room. If you fail to jump into the door transition, or aren't quick enough for your i-frames to still be active, you'll need to drop down after the door, and adjust your strats accordingly.

=== Beginner ===

If you climb up the right side, you can easily kill the pirates in your path, including with a [[hero shot]] to kill the top pirate in the first section. If you don't shoot right to kill the pirate standing on that platform, there's a very good chance that its laser will hit you during your descent through the middle section. If you're doing a [[moonfall]], this will reset your fall speed and negate the effects of the moonfall.

The pirate at the bottom of the descent doesn't need to be killed, you can jump ahead of the lasers it shoots. If you do kill it though, a horizontal shot will produce far less lag than an angle down shot.

Once you reach the bottom of the descent, you can do four large walljumps on the left side to get through the one-tile gap next to the floating platform. Alternatively, you could forgo wall jumps and [[ledge grab]] up the floating platforms until you reach the top.

At the top, you'll generally need two shots in order to kill both pirates and open the door, but if you hold off shooting until after you're on the ground and running, you will only need one shot.

If you go up the left side instead at the beginning, you can walljump twice, move a bit wide, and fire into the pirate before landing on the left-side platform. Then you can simply kill the right-side standing pirate on your way through the descent.

One fairly consistent method to stop on the last tile in time for the moonfall is to jump onto the last tile, allowing you to do a buffered jump press, like with the moonfall in [[The Climb]].

=== Optimal ===

The optimal strat also goes up the left side, but does a [[downgrab]] onto that platform after shooting up-left into that pirate. The optimal moonfall will have you turnaround and "skid" right next to the ledge, stopping for as little time as possible to set up the moonwalk. A different walljump pattern will also save time in this room.

True Completion, also known as True 100%, combines [[100%]] and [[100% Map Completion]] with the goal to collect every item and map tile in the game, while also eliminating every boss and mini-boss. The animals are also saved, making it one of the only categories where saving the animals is mandatory.

Previous versions of the ruleset involved a subset of these rules, but this set was settled on because it contains all objectives tracked by the game. Although putting 100 shots into Ceres Ridley does not set a permanent flag, it does change the cutscene. All other required objectives are tracked in the game's RAM.

A previous world record route was based on the [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gfrED87y3iyMyHUempY9pBCxeof-RfpmLf4AF6NzZzY/edit#gid=0 Map Completion route by Sweetnumb], with a few minor adjustments.

However, the current world record route does the X-ray area immediately after Upper Norfair and Forgotten Highway immediately after Wrecked Ship, enabling Brinstar to be revisited with all major items. This re-route saves a fair chunk of time over the former world record route, mostly due to being able to go through Brinstar in the revisit with Space Jump, Screw Attack, and Plasma Beam, including being able to kill Spore Spawn in one charge shot, similar to the Any% All Bosses fight.

A unique technique, showcased exclusively in this category, is the ability to pause/unpause and move away from map stations, allowing the room to be exited and skip the automatic pause that a map station brings up after being acquired. This technique also allows items (mostly beams) to be turned on and off without the timeloss from an extra pause being added to the run, provided the pauses are done at map stations.

In the WR route, this is used to turn off Spazer at Norfair Map Station to have X-Factors available for Phantoon, as well as (optimally, though this is not done in the WR run) turning on Spazer at Wrecked Ship Map Station to have it available again to perform Robot Flush, subsequently turning it off again at the Forgotten Highway down elevator (which does add an extra pause, however Robot Flush saves enough time to make this pause worth adding).
In addition to these uses, Ice Beam is turned off at Brinstar Map Station and then back on at Crateria Map Station, which makes the cleanup of Brinstar more comfortable (and speculated to be faster) by not having to use missiles or shoot enemies twice. The only difficulty this choice adds to the route is the fact that the Boyons in the Crateria Supers room cannot be frozen, and instead are usually Screw Attacked through. Ice Beam is, of course, turned on at the final map station in preparation for the Metroid rooms (in addition to the Mother Brain fight). At either Brinstar Map or Crateria Map, runners usually turn off Varia Suit to make performing Stand-up easier.

100% Map Completion, aka. Mapo is a category with the purpose of turning all the existing map tiles in pink. This can be made by passing by all the map tiles with the exception of boss rooms, whose are automatically turned pink on the exit. Plus, an invisible map in [[Green Brinstar Fireflea Room]], for which its collection or not has to be decided by the community [[(ED's explanation of why this tile should not be counted|*]]. Ceres has 12 tiles, Crateria 218, Brinstar 247, Norfair 361, Wrecked Ship 69, Maridia 276, and Tourian 78. All this makes a total of 1261 (only counting pink map squares) or 1262 (the set of pink map squares together with 1 especially conveniently accessible permanently black map square), respectively, map squares, and in the map square counter practice hack, the corresponding map square counts are 1243 and 1244.

=Items=
This category allows to take as many items as you want to complete the game and turn all map tiles in pink. As you have to travel through every room in the game, the penalty time to go pick up e-tank is slightly lower than in any%. Thereby, runners usually pick up at least 7 tanks to allow stand-up glitch. Another reason to pick up extra items is to either refill your energy or avoid later farm which would cost more time.

If used, the number of tiles collected is shown upon entering the ship at the end of the run. 1244 tiles are required for a valid run.

=Boss Rooms=
Most map tiles in the game are turned pink by simply entering their bounds. Boss rooms are (mostly) an exception to this, however. Because the game turns off the minimap during bossfights, most boss rooms automatically turn all of their tiles pink on leaving the room, even if they weren't entered during the course of the fight. The two exceptions to this are Ceres Ridley and Crocomire. Ceres Ridley requires re-entering the room to collect the tile after exiting the fight, and Crocomire gives most of the tiles in the room on death, but not the tiles by his E-Tank. This requires staying by the E-Tank optimally until the map turns pink, ensuring all the tiles in his room are collected.

=Route=

==Ceres==
Ceres is identical to any other category, with the exception of the Ridley map tile. After the Ceres Escape is triggered, the Ridley Room must be re-entered to actually get the map tile for that room.[[File:Ceres_Ridley_Tile_Missing.jpg|thumb|Ridley's room must be re-entered]]

==Early Game==
The run up to Early Supers is identical to Any%, 100%, and most other categories. Get morph, alpha missiles, bombs, fight BT, terminator E-Tank, and get Early Supers. The green pirates just after Terminator E-Tank can be run through instead of missiled, health is not an issue. After Early Supers, get the two map tiles in Brinstar Reserve, and perform Reverse Mockball (optimally) to escape.

Head to Big Pink, grab the Charge Missile and the Charge Beam, and go toward Red Tower. In Green Hill Zone, get the tile by Pipe Missile, and the top right tile by the gate. Go down Red Tower, opening the door to Sloaters Refill now for better ammo management later. Get the Spazer tile, optionally picking up Spazer. Head to Kraid's Lair now, picking up the Kraid Save Room map tile on the way. Defeat Kraid and collect the Varia Suit. You don't have to pick up Kraid's room tiles, they automatically turn pink on exiting the room. Head to the missile and energy refill room above Kraid, pick up Kraid's E-Tank, and go down the elevator to Norfair.

==Norfair==
Collect Hi-Jump E-Tank and Hi-Jump Boots. Most runners additionally collect Hi-Jump Missile, though it is not required to be collected. Head to Bubble Mountain, collecting all the tiles in Pre-Cathedral and Cathedral. Get the Bubble Mountain Save Room, ascend Bubble mountain, and go pick up Speed Booster. In Speed Hallway, make sure to fall down the two pits after the first slope downward, because not all the tiles are collected automatically. Next, head to Wave Beam, collecting the Wave Missiles along the way. Escape using the lower door, and go down through Remembered Highway, tanking the lava damage. On arrival in Kronic Boost room, take the top left door to Magdollite Tunnel. Ascend Purple Shaft, and collect the purple farm room tile. Most runners do a single farm here, you can do more if extra resources are needed. Go back to Bubble Mountain, bomb the end of the tunnel and roll through to collect the bottom right tile. Exit through the left door to the Crocomire gate farm room.

Head down through the wave gate to Crocomire, being sure to get the bottom right tile by the farm in the gate room. Beat Crocomire, pick up his e-tank and wait a bit by the e-tank, you won't collect the map tiles on the right side until the game changes the music. Head to the Croc PBs, grab them and go down the shaft. Go to the cosine room and get the tiles, then go to the Indiana Jones Room. Collect all the tiles in there, then collect Grapple.
Take the grapple escape, grab all the map tiles in the water pools. Pick up the croc save room tile. You also may farm a bit here. Take the croc escape, grab all tiles in it, head back to business center. Take the map room tile, take the elevator to Brinstar.

==Wrecked Ship==
Take Sloaters Refill, and enter X-Ray Hall. (Optimally, break the tube now. Some runners choose to wait until after Lower Norfair to do so, which loses minimal time.) Use Grapple and d-boosting to go through X-Ray Hall, getting the first pit tiles on the first pass through. Get the tiles in X-Ray's room, and get the back pit tiles on the exit. Climb Red Tower, take the alpha power bombs, and the tile behind the, take the red tower save room tile, take the beta powerbombs. Take the elevator, cross the moat, you'll pick up the underwater tiles later. Go straight to Wrecked ship. Take the Save Room tile, take the Wrecked Ship left missile tiles, take the map room tile, and go defeat Phantoon.

Grab the right super tiles, you don't have to pick it up, grab the left super. Head straight to the attic (You'll pick up ws e-tank later). Clear all the enemies, open the left door, grab all the right attic missile tiles, go back to Wrecked Ship Exterior. Visit straight up the Wrecked Ship reserve tank upper part. Collect all the tiles you can grab in the upper part of West Ocean [[West_Ocean_Map_Strat]]. You don't have to break the Super block, all tiles are free from access. Go to the bowling area. Head to the reserve tank, but don't spark, just jump into the shaft to pick up the remaining tile. Pick up gravity, when exiting Wrecked Ship, jump into the transition, to pick the two tile in front of it.

==Forgotten Highway==
At this point, the run diverges wildly from 100%. Clean up the top tiles in West Ocean, and re-enter the Moat. Collect the bottom two tiles in Moat, and go back to West Ocean. Get the bottom tiles in West Ocean, and re-enter Wrecked Ship. Go through to Sponge Bath, up to the Wrecked Ship E-tank, and get the tank. Get the bottom tiles in the e-tank room, and exit to East Ocean. Collect all the tiles in East Ocean, go down the kago room, get all the tiles in the crab maze, and take the elevator down. Get the save room, go through the pancake room, and down the sand pit in the next room. Go along the bottom of [[Plasma Spark Room]], and take the toilet down. Optimally, charge a spark in the toilet bottom room going left, and spark left through West Sand Hall. Go west to the gate, perform a [[Green Gate Glitch]], and enter Main Street.

==Maridia==
Go up Main Street, and take the door into Fish Tank. The rest of the tiles will be collected later. Go up Fish Tank as in 100%, and go through Mama Turtle room. Do not get the items in Mama Turtle room, though. Get the tiles on the right side of Fish Tank, and exit through the top right door into Mt Everest. Run along the bottom to the hole to Crab Supers, and optionally get the super missile. Use a spark to collect the right side tiles in Mt Everest, as shown [https://youtu.be/kJBQz5PIGPI here]. Go up to the Beach area. Get the tile with the missile, and go into the Swiss Cheese room. Get the tiles in Watering Hole, and optionally collect the Super Missile there. NOTE: If you only want one super missile pack before Botwoon (usually at least one is desired), the Watering Hole pack is a significant portion faster to collect than Crab Supers.
Backtrack to the Beach area, collect the rest of the tiles, and go down to Aqueduct. Get the save room, kill Botwoon, and get the Botwoon E-tank.

Get the maridia missile refill tiles, get the colosseum tiles and Draygon's save and refill tiles. Then, get the tiles in Precious room, then fight Draygon and get Space Jump. Backtrack to Botwoon E-tank room, and take one of the sand pits down. Go to Aqueduct, jump up and get the tile left of the missile, and take the right sand pit. Get the tiles in Right Sand Pit, and go to Shaktool. Choose whether or not to get Spring Ball, and take the toilet back up to Plasma Spark Room. Go to Plasma room, get Plasma, and get all the tiles in Plasma Room. Backtrack to Plasma Spark Room again, clean up the right side tiles, and exit through the bottom door to the farm room before Cacatac Alley. Get all the tiles in Cacatac Alley, and take the other sand pit down in Botwoon E-tank room. Get the tiles in Aqueduct where the missile and super are, and optionally collect the super missile. Take the left sand pit and get the tiles in there. Get the maridia map room, and exit out via the gate. Take the elevator into Norfair.

==Lower Norfair==
Get Ice Beam normally, but exit through the upper set of rooms like the game intends. Power bomb the blocks and go down crumble tower to croc speedway. Go through Nutella Refill to Kronic Boost Room (don't do kronic boost though) and get all the tiles in the Lava Dive room. Get the save room and take the elevator to Lower Norfair. After the elevator, go right, go up the power bomb floor room, and run right in the room with all the enemies. Jump up to get the second tile, then go back to the elevator room. Activate the Space Jump chozo, get the bottom right tile, and go to GT's room. Get the top right tile before the fight starts, then kill GT as normal, and get Screw Attack.

Get the GT refill tile, and progress through Lower Norfair as in 100%, getting the Mickey Mouse tiles. Amphitheatre has many tiles that are annoying to get. Optimally, one gets the left two columns on the way down, then space jumps across the bottom, getting the bottom right tile. Then, clean up the top right area below the ledge, go up the staircase to the top left area, and exit the room. Laying a PB for sound queue lag reduction is an option, but not recommended due to the number of PBs needed in cleanup. Descend Kihunter Stairs normally (do not get the save room yet), and traverse to Ridley as in 100%. Getting Ridley's E-Tank is an option, though not optimal. Continue on the 100% path through the rest of LN Escape, getting the save room on the revisit of Kihunter Stairs.

Back in Upper Norfair, collect the Norfair Reserve map tiles, the Bubble Mountain Save Room if you did not already, the final tile in Bubble Mountain on the right side (above the missile), and exit Norfair through Frog Speedway.

==Cleanup Pre-Tourian==
After the elevator out of Upper Norfair, head to the tube. Break the tube, grab the save room below the tube, and enter Main Street. Ascend Main Street, collecting all the tiles that have not yet been acquired, and exit through the top door into Mt. Everest. Collect the final few tiles in the top left of Mt. Everest, and exit into Red Fish Room. Exit Maridia through the top of Red Tower, and take the elevator into Crateria.

Go left, through the Crateria tube room, and collect the tiles on the east side of Landing Site. Spark to Crateria PBs, collect those tiles, and go through Gauntlet. The tiles in Landing Site on the top left will be gotten during the escape. In Gauntlet, get the Gauntlet E-Tank (unless you chose to get Ridley E-Tank and your health is still reasonably high). After Gauntlet, take the elevator to Green Brinstar.

After entering Green Brinstar, get the map station tiles, the save room, and the fireflea room/missile refill. On the way out of the missile refill, grab the hidden tile in the fireflea room. Go through the Etecoons area, getting the save room and the hidden bombway tile in the vertical ascent room, and exit into Dachora Room. Fall down the dachora pit, grab the energy refill tile, and spark out, exiting to Big Pink.

Climb Big Pink, get the save room by Spore Spawn, and enter the kihunter room. Kill the kihunters, enter Spore Spawn's room, and kill Spore Spawn. (Moon)fall down the shaft and exit to Big Pink. Enter the Wave Gate room, get the e-tank tile, and return to Big Pink. Climb up to the Mission Impossible area and go through the Mission Impossible room, making sure not to do the Mission Impossible trick, as that misses the bottom right map tile in that room. Get the Power Bomb in that room if your current count is under 4. [recount probably needed] Use a bomb to open the Charge Beam area and go down to Waterway, getting the tiles and exiting. Make sure to get the two power bombs the caterpillars dropped. Get the tile below the entrance in Green Hill Zone if you didn't in early game, and enter Retro Brinstar.

Clean up Retro Brinstar as in 100% (without the items, of course). Carry a spark through the elevator and spark through Pit Room, getting the missile tile and then exiting to The Climb. Spark up Climb Supers (optionally collecting the super missile for Metroid rooms) and go to Parlor. Get the map room tiles, 230 missile tiles, and the save room. Finally, head to G4.

==Tourian==
After the G4 elevator, get the first save room in Tourian and go through the Metroid rooms. Make sure to have enough ammo to win the game. Do your preferred method of Baby Skip, being sure not to forget the refill tile afterward. After the Gadora, get the final save room. Do Zeb Skip, MB1, MB2, and Standup Glitch. In Escape, go through the 3rd room the long way, getting the top left map tiles by bonking your head on the ceiling on the left side of the second level. Charge a spark before falling off the top level, and go through the door. (Or, to save 1s if done optimally, do [https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/683513486038532114/949655333100478494/rip_leodox_spark.mp4 this stupid jump]). Spark up the first part of Leodox Room, and do everything up to the moonfall as normal. After the final moonfall, collect the tiles on the right side of the room, and spark up The Climb. Ascend Parlor as normal, and spark up the left side of Landing Site. Get all the tiles on the left side of Landing Site, and board the Ship to finish the run. If the tile counter says 1244, your run is valid.

= General Knowledge =

Botwoon has 3000 health.

Botwoon is only vulnerable to damage at his head, where [[Missile|Missiles]], [[Super Missile|Super Missiles]], [[Charge Beam|charged shots]], and [[Charge Beam Combos|special beam attacks]] will deal damage.

Botwoon will always first appear from the upper left hole, and will appear after an amount between 271 and 273 frames has elapsed after Samus has entered the room.

Botwoon deals 32 / 64 / 128 damage with his body and 30 / 60 / 120 damage with his head to [[Gravity Suit]] / [[Varia Suit]] / [[Power Suit]] Samus, respectively. Samus can come into contact with multiple parts of Botwoon's body at once, so be careful of where you have her positioned when an invulnerability period ends.

Botwoon's acid deals 24 / 48 / 96 damage to Gravity Suit / Varia Suit / Power Suit Samus, respectively, and can strike multiple times depending on how Samus comes into contact with it.

== Snaking ==

Botwoon's standard procedure is to serpentine around the room in a seemingly random manner.

Botwoon has four different opening snaking patterns he can perform, and many different snaking patterns that he can use throughout the fight.

== Spitting ==

After every snaking pattern, Botwoon can choose to poke his head out from one of the holes in the room and spit five pieces of acid in an arc from his location.

Botwoon can perform this action multiple times in a row.

Botwoon will lose the ability to perform this action upon being below 1500 health after a spitting period ends.

== Death ==

Botwoon's body parts will still act as a source of damage until they explode.

A reduced amount of drops will spawn if Botwoon's tail explodes too early compared to the rest of his body, which will occur if his tail is too close to the floor upon his death.

If Botwoon's chamber is escaped before the center pillar has been fully destroyed, the game will not consider Botwoon to be dead. In this case, Botwoon will be inside his chamber, along with the center pillar, if his chamber is reentered.

= Categories =

== Any% (Beginner) ==

A charged [[Ice Beam|Ice]]/[[Wave Beam|Wave]]/[[Spazer]] shot will deal the same amount of damage as a Super Missile. A way to start the fight is by positioning yourself slightly behind the bottom hole, facing left with angle up held and a charge shot ready. Fire the charge shot as soon as he appears, and then use Super Missiles afterward. Return to using the beam if Botwoon is not dead after you have expended your Super Missiles.

In case of danger, Botwoon cannot damage you with his body if you are positioned next to the left wall as none of his patterns extend to that location. Acid particles can still cover that location; however, as stated above, he will not generate these once below 50%, and they are simple to avoid when morphed.

== Any% (Optimal) ==

There are two primary setups for performing the [[Charge_Beam_Combos#Wave_Shield|X-Factor]] opener on Botwoon.

The setup using an audio cue involves charging the beam for the X-Factor on the fourth note of the miniboss music riff while facing left underneath the upper left hole, turning around to face right, then jumping on the fifth note of the second repetition of the riff. Your jump should peak at the height of the upper left hole.

The setup without an audio cue involves running into the room, running right into the right wall, immediately turning around and running into the left wall, then charging the beam as soon as Samus touches the left wall, turning around to face right, then jumping when Samus blinks white quickly the second time (almost immediately after a charge is gained). Again, your jump should peak at the height of the upper left hole.

Afterward, finish him off with Super Missiles. If your X-Factor was on point, it should only take six. If you run out of Super Missiles before Botwoon explodes, you can either use Missiles (3 Missiles = 1 Super Missile) or charged Wave Beam shots (2 charged Wave Beam shots = 1 Super Missile).

Botwoon will make a noise every time a projectile connects with his head. This means that if every X-Factor particle connected with his head, you should hear Botwoon make four noises.

Decalled found a setup that allows an opening X-Factor to hit without Samus taking a hit, allowing you to immediately start hitting him with Supers. This can also be combined with missiles at the opener to save Supers for Draygon.

== 14% Ice ==

You will want to position yourself slightly behind the bottom hole, facing left with angle up held. It is recommended to start with Missiles as the start of the fight will be the slowest Botwoon will ever be, and then deal the remaining damage with Super Missiles. You should be able to get about 3 Super Missiles in when Botwoon pokes his head out from a hole to spit acid, although he is not guaranteed to ever do that during the fight.

Although it is possible to "one round" Botwoon in this category, it is significantly more difficult than in Any%, and certain opening patterns make "one rounding" extremely difficult.

If Botwoon is still alive after you have expended all of your ballistics, you can finish with charged Ice Beam shots. You can also try using [[Ice Shield]], but it can cause tremendous lag when used incorrectly, be difficult to damage Botwoon with, and expend Power Bombs that would be useful for [[Draygon]] later.

This information also applies to the 14% Speed category; however, certain actions may be ever so slightly different due to having [[Speed Booster]].

== GT Classic ==

Having the items from [[Golden Torizo Code|GT Code]] allows for the [[X-Plasma]] exploit to be performed by activating X-Ray Scope multiple times as a charged Ice/Wave/Plasma shot passes through Botwoon's head.

Since charged Ice/Wave/Plasma deals 900 damage, you can slay Botwoon in this manner with only one charge shot with proper X-Ray Scope activations.

== Reverse Boss Order ==

Since Botwoon will deal maximum damage to Power Suit Samus, a strategy for handling Botwoon in this category is to camp in the safe zone next to the left wall and unload Super Missiles into him from there.
