You can bring Samus to a complete halt at any time she is moving on foot by pressing either the angle up or angle down button after releasing input from the directional pad. Alternatively, holding up by itself on the directional pad will produce the same result.

This simple technique allows for enhanced precision and accuracy in the execution of certain room strategies, such as stopping before the doors in Ceres Station as they open, or using taps on the d-pad to stop on a certain pixel position for the Bomb Torizo fight, or firing the shot for getting the Spore Spawn Supers early from Big Pink.
