Kill Crocs Tongue RTA

From A complete guide to Super Metroid speedrunning
Jump to: navigation, search

This category aims to kill Crocomire's tongue, which requires 82 power bombs if each one double-hits the tongue. If planning to use glitches and Crystal Flash clip up where Crocomire cannot damage Samus, you'll need an additional 10 PBs, and since your initial PB for the crystal flash likely won't be close enough to Crocomire to double-hit the tongue, plan on bring at least 93 power bombs. Because only 50 power bombs are available in the game under normal conditions (and one pack/5 power bombs are locked behind Crocomire), either some type of glitch must be used to acquire more, or you must rely on the ~4% drop rate from drops from Crocomire's projectiles.

Spacetime Reset Route

The current World Record uses a route that's identical to the GT Spacetime route until it gets to the Crateria Tube, then it goes down and repeatedly grabs the PBs in Alpha Power Bomb Room, then uses Spacetime Beam to reset the room.

God Block Route

There is another route that's more viable on console (since Spacetime Beam will often crash on console), that uses the setup similar to the one from 0% to set Samus' Power Bomb count to 127.

The normalized movement at the end of the 0% setup can be used as-is, but there are other faster normalized setups available to this category because of the block shuffler effects after the God Block is touched -- in 0% the transition blocks just to the right of where Samus lands are not present.

After the initial bunny-hop to the left, do a turnaround bombjump without a remorph to the right, then bunny-hop to the left. Continue the bunny-hop after the item fanfare box closes, then walk to the right. You will warp to Terminator in-bounds.

For this setup, you need to jump high enough to no longer touch the block before turning around, then bunny hop to the left. Rather than setting your powerbomb count to 127, this setup adds 127 to your count. This method does not require Hi Jump to be disabled.

The current record collects 40 power bombs before entering Crocomire's room, including a Kraid kill for Varia and a trip down to Lower Norfair to collect both packs there, and Hi-Jump Boots and Screw Attack to make Lower Norfair traversal easier. The only two packs skipped are behind Crocomire and in Maridia. Alternate routes are also viable:

  • Skipping LN to enter earlier with 30 power bombs. Makes the run more reliant on RNG.
  • Skipping LN and Varia. May require more energy/reserve tanks to make the hell runs practical, but is probably faster than the 30 PB + Varia route.
  • Swapping Kraid/Varia for Phantoon/Gravity and collecting 45 power bombs. Likely requires skipping Screw Attack to make it viable; even then if it takes more than five minutes longer than the 40 power bomb route then it will end up being just as reliant on RNG if not more reliant.
